As a patient-led and patient-governed organization, the Patients’ Association of Canada promotes, develops, and enhances the role and influence of the patient and the patient perspective in health care in order to improve the healthcare experience for all.

In many public discussions about health care, the patient perspective is presented by disease-based organizations, health care professionals, researchers, or policy makers, who often have their own points of view that should not be confused with those of patients. This organization is part of a larger trend to engage citizens with their communities and to enable them to speak for themselves.

Key Organization Purposes and Objectives

-To be a patient-governed and patient-led organization that brings the patient voice to the health field in order to improve the health care experience for all;

-To engage in the educational activities, and collaborate on research and innovation;

-To provide patients with opportunities to share their diverse experiences with health services;

-To disseminate information about patients’ experiences including the lessons learned and the criteria which describe patient-sensitive care;

-To promote increased patient engagement with healthcare organizations and to strengthen the patient voice by means of consultation, educational programs and publications specifically designed to improve the capacity of patients and their care givers to interact with the health system;

-To recognize those professionals and organizations that provide patient-sensitive service through awards programs such as the “Patients’ Choice Awards” and partner with appropriate professional organizations to establish and sponsor such awards;

-To publish educational materials relevant to the patient experience.
