Kasambya Community Computer Centre :: Canada Charity Guide

Kasambya Community Computer Centre (KCCC) is a non-profit development group in Kasambya Trading Centre, Mubende District, approximately 37 km southwest of Mubende Town.

The group was started in July 2006 by several local leaders. I, a local US Peace Corps Volunteer, assist in providing technical advice for the project.

The founders include the in-charge of the local health centre III, headmasters (both primary and secondary), religious leaders and several members of the local government staff.

Our vision from the initial foundation of the group is to establish a computer training centre that will be a publicly available resource, with an extensive digital library as well as a connection to the global community via the Internet.

The group received two-thirds of the initial project costs through a Peace Corps Partnership grant. The remaining third of the total initial costs came through community donations.

The centre officially opened for operations in October, 20th 2007, offering courses and general IT services. The courses provided are sector-specific instruction on particular software packages that could be useful in the student’s particular situation. For example, the combination of courses taught to a small business owner would not be the same as that taught to a secondary school student, for each has their unique professional interests.

The target sectors for the centre are education (primary and secondary students and teachers and holiday programs for university students), small business and organizations, health and agriculture.

In the area of general IT services we allow community members to use the centre at their convenience for nominal fee. Thus, once people are trained in how to use computers they will have locally available recourses to make those skills work for them in their lives. We also offer Internet services, computer maintenance, laminating and graphical design work.

There are a total of 407 members currently trained, of which 85 are still undertaking courses.
